We're behind you 100% | FAQ
What is a 'Personal Protection Dog'? A Personal Protection dog, is essentially a dog that has been created by a selective breeding program, chosen for inherent traits and natural abilities, and properly trained to enhance and develop the dogs desired behaviors and teaching them a set of skills that can be an asset to their human family/partners.
In other words it is a Family
Pet that will be everything you could ever want from a Pet, but at the
same time has been trained to Protect his/her Family at whatever cost!
It's sort of like having a Police Officer living in the house with you
at all times!*
Here at Security-K9 we know that selecting a new member of the family is difficult enough, so we take all the rest of the stress upon ourselves!
When you purchase a Protection Dog from Security K9 we provide everything
you will need to start your new family member out in comfort! The only
thing you will need to provide is the roof over his/her head and love;
leave the rest to our expertise!
Will my own Security-K9 Protection Dog attack me or my Family?NO! If you follow our instructions for the acclimation of the Dog into
your home you should never have the slightest notion to worry about the
Dog becoming aggressive towards you or your family! A Protection Dog is
the only defensive weapon that can NOT be used against you.
Yes, Dogs that have the desired genetic makeup, proper
socialization and imprinting during critical stages of their growth, and
solid training can be absolutely wonderful and trustworthy members of an
active family with children.*
Yes, Personal Protection Dogs that have the desired
temperament and training can be excellent companions in the home. The
most effective tool as a Home Security System can be a highly trained Personal
Protection Dog – they act as an unbeatable Deterrent from Home Invasion,
Break-ins, Robbery, Assault, and so on.*
Are Security-K9 Dogs good with other Animals? Yes, Personal Protection Dogs can, and SHOULD have a
high 'pack instinct', which enables them to become bonded
with their Human pack, as well as other
animals. Each dog is an individual,
and therefore care should be taken when introducing a dog to any unfamiliar
animal. A responsible owner with proper handling techniques can expect
his/her dog to be accepting of friendly animals of all
species.*
Yes, Personal Protection Dogs, when properly trained
and raised, are very willing and happily travel with their
human family by automobile, train, bus, watercraft, or aircraft.*
Yes, as long as your Personal Protection Dog is adjusted
and bonded to their family, can be trained to readily accept commands from
more than one family member. If more than one family member will
be commanding your dog, proper care should be taken to ensure commands
are given in a consistent manner so the dog does not become confused.*
Will my Security-K9 Dog need to have follow-up training? Yes and No, dogs are very much like humans
in the sense that if a learned behavior and skill is not kept sharp, mental
and physical response and reaction time may decline. We like to use the
example of riding a bicycle; once you learn to ride a bike you never really
forget what you've learned however, if you go for long periods of time
without riding the bicycle you will become rusty with your skills... but
it's nothing that a little refresher now and then can't cure! We have training
programs in place to train YOU on proper handling and 'Skills conditioning'
techniques, which will assure the proper maintenance of your dogs skills
and training. Also,
Security-K9 provides In-Home
Training services that will allow you and
your dog to have One-on-One instruction from an Security-K9 trainer that
will assist in Monthly, or Quarterly Maintenance and Condition Training
at your home. Also, check out our Workshops.
Following the Initial Handlers Course at the time of delivery with a Certified SK9 Trainer, our clients typically will spend 10 to 15 minutes daily to assure a 100% 'Skills retention', followed by Monthly or Quarterly Maintenance and Condition Training sessions.
How long is the dogs Working life expectancy? Depending on what breed is chosen, an average working life expectancy of any Personal Protection Dog should be well into the dogs early teen years.
Traditionally, trainers and breeders alike specify only the size or health of their dogs rather than the entire picture of the individual dog. Even when the trainer or breeder is fully forthcoming about the health or size of the dog, what tends to occur is that the dog does have the size promised or the correct health, but is lacking mentally, and remains un-trainable, or is not what was expected from the dog as far as service capabilities. This is yet another reason why choosing a dog that is both mentally as well as physically healthy is so important.
Each dog is unique in terms of temperament and character. Typically Female dogs are smaller in size than Males, and may have somewhat more of an affectionate or loving maternal nature with children or other animals, whereas Males may be somewhat more aloof with children and perhaps slightly more dominant in nature. Please read the various Breed Descriptions section of this website for more information on the differences, as well as Pros and Cons of the dogs offered by SK9.
Does spaying or neutering a dog change their ability to be protective?
No, often times this question is asked, typically due to health reasons our staff of highly trained Veterinarians will recommend that Personal Protection Dogs should be spayed or neutered around the age of 8 years old, to lessen the risks of potential illness during later years of the dogs life. Occasionally SK9 will have dogs for sale that have been altered, however, this can always be done at a later date and in no way will negatively affect your dogs performance as a fully functional Personal Protection Dog.
A dogs senses and natural innate behaviors provide sound and stable dogs with an uncanny ability to differentiate between an actual threat, or a perceived threat or danger. Each dog is unique in temperament and personality, and this is yet another reason why it is important to understand YOUR personal protection dog – which is what SK9 is committed to doing, teaching you, as well as your dog!
Who trains SK9's dogs, and where are they trained? Our dogs partake in a rigorous, thorough, cutting edge training program that encompasses many real-world situations and scenarios. SK9's trainers are internationally known handlers and trainers of Personal Protection Dogs as well as Police dogs for Law Enforcement agencies WORLD WIDE! Training typically takes place at the Security K9 Training Center in Europe (Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary), followed by customized training (if requested by our clients) by our North American trainers in the United States of America.
Security K9 has an approach and world-wide recognized system in place for match making each of our clients with a dog that will BEST FIT their unique needs and situation. Start by completing our Customized Pre-Purchase Application.
How long should I expect to wait for my SK9 dog to be ready for me? Typically, within 2 to 6 weeks. Depending of course on what breed is selected, and if SK9 has a dog that fits your immediate needs. If a dog must be selected and trained specifically for you, 3 to 6 months advance notice may be required.
No, our dogs are familiar and comfortable with travel, as they are raised and trained in normal every day life situations and scenarios – Traveling is just another day for them! Also, special care is taken when transporting our dogs internationally to assure the best of care for our K9 companions.
Typically our dogs will fully adjust, adapt, and bond with their new family during the first few weeks. Our clients have proudly stated: "After just 2 weeks Alec is an integrated irreplaceable member of our family... It's like he's been with us since puppy hood, it's a wonderful thing!".
Here are some interesting little-known facts about the additional unknown
benefits of having a Personal Protection Dog with you:According to the FBI in 2001, a burglary occurs once every 9 seconds in the United States. Two out of three burglaries are residential, and 60 percent of those occur in broad daylight. In many of those cases some sort of personal injury takes place. Our Trained Protection Dogs are trained to Alert and Protect against situations where there is a threat and/or a break in.
The presence of a Protection Dog will minimize your chances of unlawful entry into your home or business. A Personal Protection Dog will make it nearly impossible for a criminal to enter your premises. It is proven that attackers, burglars and aggressors will completely stay away from any person and/or house that has a dog that appears to be a Guard Dog or Protection Dog – Security-K9 offers Dogs that look the part but are also capable of the follow through that will mean the difference if you are dealing with a persistent aggressor that is not easily turned away by mere sight alone.
Most people that survive an attack or break
in have said that after a break in they feel violated and even fearful
about returning to their home or driving or walking alone. These feelings
last for months and in some cases years or never go away. Make no mistake
- the trauma left behind is real. This does not have to
be the case; Security-K9 is here to provide you with a Personal Protection
Dog that will be vigilant and greatly minimize and eliminate your chances
of being targeted for crime.
What is a "Basic Family Protection Dog"?A "Basic
Family Protection Dog" is more commonly known as a "Companion Watch Dog" or "Family
Guardian" to the general public. Part of Security K9's
training and development process, a Family Protection Dog is raised with
children and around other animals as a member of the Family, and it is
a part of the family in everyday life.
A Family Protection Dog will instinctively alert its owners to the presence of intruders coming into its house or territory by barking or acting in a agitated or suspicious manner. Many Working and Herding breeds show a natural instinct as a Family Protection Dog, and the Security K9 Basic Family Protection Dog is tested and specifically selection tested for these natural qualities prior to being selected for placement. The Basic Family Protection Dog's Obedience, Sociability and General Control is without a doubt something that they do not have instinctively, and therefore these behaviors and 'skills' are trained by Security K9.
A trained Family Protection Dog should
bark, threaten, and/or growl while on duty in his territory when there
is a presence of a threat or a stranger. This dog will most likely never
encounter a true threatening 'attacker' and therefore is is
more of a "Pet" or "Companion" than a "Trained
Personal Protection Dog".
A Basic Family Protection Dog is not formally
trained to Bite or Attack an intruder and should not do so unwarranted.
The Basic Family Protection Dog is a loving member of the family, while
also acting as an effective VISUAL DETERRENCE.
What is a "Fully Trained Personal
Protection Dog"?A "Fully Trained Personal Protection Dog" is a dog that has been trained to protect its Family/Owner from harm due to an attack at whatever cost.
Fully Trained Personal Protection Dogs are trained by Security K9 to apprehend an Attacker either on command, or by threat to its Owner; the Fully Trained Personal Protection Dog will apprehend an Attacker by vocal and/or physical intimidation, threat, or by biting the Attacker. The Fully Trained Personal Protection Dog has complete Obedience, Sociability and Verbal Control from it's Handler when in public and is also a good Family Protection Dog, with more extensive Real-World training.
Matching the right Personal Protection Dog to your personality, situation and lifestyle is very important. If you have a high security problem, or are in a 'high risk category' you may want a dog that is more serious and constantly ready to properly respond to a threat from an Attacker, but if you do not have a constant serious threat or security issue, the Security K9 Fully Trained Personal Protection Dog may be the right choice for you!
If you have a low security problem you may want a dog that will alert
when a threat is present, but is more relaxed in general and is not looking
for an attack from every stranger it sees. There are several different
types of Personal Protection Dogs, and here at Security K9 we are very
thorough in our selection process. It is of the utmost importance for your
Personal Protection Dog to be 100% compatible with your situation and lifestyle,
and therefore it is also important that you put your trust in Security
K9 to do what we do best, and that is to analyze your needs and wants and
then set you up with the Protection Dog that best fits your needs!
What
is an "Initial Handlers Course"?Handler training for your new Personal Protection Dog is necessary for both experienced and inexperienced Handlers. Even seasoned Handlers will need some coaching when they receive their new Security K9 Personal Protection Dog.
During the Security
K9 Initial Handler Course you will learn proper control techniques
for your Security K9 Personal Protection Dog in a variety of real-life
scenarios. You will also learn how to maximize your safety in any type
of confrontational situation with someone who wishes to do harm to you
or your family, I.E. Intruder, Car Jacker, Criminal, Stalker, Mugger, etc.
You will learn the basics of every day routine, proper care and adjustment.
Although many other Companies in our industry do not offer
any sort of 'Continuation
Training' or 'Maintenance Training', we highly
recommend it. In some cases, depending on the nature of the situation for
which the Security K9 Personal Protection Dog exists, the Dog as well as
the Owner/Handler may require a once
monthly (or quarterly) Training Class.
You will be depending upon your new Security K9 Personal Protection Dog
for your life, it should go without question that a regularly scheduled
Continuation Training program will be in order. Please read our Training
section to find out more about our Training Programs, and Training
Guarantee that is given with every Security K9 Personal Protection
Dog!
What Would A Personal Protection Dog Do?A Security K9 Personal
Protection Dog is both a Visual, Verbal and Physical threat to an Intruder,
Stalker or Attacker. It is a very well known fact that criminals have a
healthy fear of large dogs, and an Intruder, Attacker or Stalker will always
be able to sense the confidence of a Security K9 Personal Protection Dog,
and, in most cases will move on to the next victim without incident. However,
if the Intruder, Attacker or Stalker is not deterred by the Visual and/or
Verbal warnings from the Security K9 Personal Protection Dog, the dog will
become what we call a Man-Stopper! The Security K9 Personal Protection
Dog will do whatever it takes to Protect his Owner/Handler!
Here's how it works:
Young Adult Prospects are carefully
selected, evaluated and tested to ensure soundness and strong nerves
for suitability in Advanced Obedience and Advanced Protection.*Statements made by Security-K9 are purely speculative as we cannot predict the future and do not take any responsibility for any actions made by any Dog if it is not in our direct care... and even if the dog is in our direct care for training we cannot predict the personal issues of any specific Dog.
